Time to resurrect Project Pluto. Perhaps with the Russians building a nuclear ramjet, the US will start looking back at nuclear thermal rockets again?

Thing is, they aren’t really useful for either the Russians or us. Russia could easily overwhelm our missile defenses, so there’s no need to evade them. And we could do the same to them. Nuclear-powered cruise missiles are the answer to a problem nobody has.

Unless that problem is that they secretly invented the cure for cancer but don’t have enough customers. Having a bunch of radiation-spewing missiles flying around solves that problem. Don’t even have to put a warhead on them.
